As of 3 August 2024, it will be possible to extend the protection of trademarks also in the Gulf country through the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) International Trademark procedure, which allows to cover as many as 131 countries simultaneously through a single application, in a single language (English, French or Spanish) and by paying a single set of fees in a single currency (Swiss francs).
Qatar joins three of the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates) that had already joined the Madrid System to ensure cross-border trademark protection.
This membership further strengthens the Madrid System as a convenient and efficient solution for trademark protection worldwide. Moreover, Qatar ranks among the countries with the highest per capita GDP internationally, representing a concrete investment opportunity in sectors such as design, food products, industrial machinery and energy.
